Paper A

For this exam paper, the candidate is presented with an invention of a client and some relevant prior art documents. The candidate's task is then to draft a suitable set of claims and the introductory part of the description of a patent application for this invention.

Before 2017, there were separate exam papers for chemistry and mechanics/electronics. From the published results, it is impossible to determine which paper a candidate chose to make. Therefore pass rates for these years don't say a lot about the difficulty level of specific papers. Since 2017, all candidates make the same exam.

Because of the Covid pandemic, the 2020 pre-exam was cancelled.
